The Fox Cities was the place to be Friday evening when the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers minor league baseball team, Neuroscience Group Field at the Fox Cities Stadium, was transformed into entertainment venue extraordinaire for the highly-anticipated rock concert featuring co-headlining ’90s alternative legends Bush and Live in celebration of their 25th anniversary of mainstream breakthrough albums “Sixteen Stone” for Bush and “Throwing Copper” for Live. The joint North American ALT-imate Tour kicked off on June 6th in Mashantucket, CT and runs through mid-September.
Taking the stage following a brief downpour, concert-goers were not deterred by the weather when Our Lady Peace, hailing from Toronto, Ontario captivated the audience with their own unique sound and style while performing a handful of their hit songs to include “Clumsy,” “Somewhere Out There” and “Superman’s Dead” among others. With over five million albums sold worldwide and multiple Juno and Much Music Video Awards under their belt, similar to alt-rockers Bush and Live, Our Lady Peace came into prominence during the alternative music scene of the 1990’s and has proven to be one of Canada’s most successful rock bands ever since and the perfect supporting act for The ALT-IMATE Tour.
Following the exhilarating performance by Our Lady Peace and with nightfall nearly upon the outdoor venue, an eerie sensation came over the crowd as multi-platinum band from Pennsylvania, Live, took the stage easing into their set with ever-climatic hit “The Dam at Otter Creek”. Right out the gate the band had the audience where they wanted them and kept the momentum going for the remainder of their 14-song set with hit-after-sensational-hit being thrust through the PA speakers with overwhelming crowd response to include an abundance of gratitude for the band’s performance of R.E.M. cover “Losing My Religion” which lead vocalist, Kowalczyk, joking shared he wish he wrote.
With a string of hit singles and over 20 million albums sold worldwide, Live reminded the Friday night concert-goers why the 1990’s were such a pivotal point in rock history ending their set on a high-note with mega-hit “Lightning Crashes” which stayed at the top of the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for 10 consecutive weeks and the Modern Rock Tracks (now Alternative Songs) chart for nine weeks from February 25 to April 22, 1995.
As if watching American powerhouse, Live, perform was not enough to call a night out with friends an overwhelming success, concert-goers were blessed to relapse back into the Post-Grunge era with one of rock’s most distinctive signature sounds when British band, Bush, stormed the stage. With lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Gavin Rossdale, at the helm accompanied by drummer Robin Goodridge, lead guitarist Chris Traynor and bassist Corey Britz, Bush wasted no time reminding the crowd why they were one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1990’s.
Starting their set strong with “Machinehead” and “The Chemicals Between Us” before inviting the crowd to give their newer material a listen when performing 2017 release “This Is War” followed by their 2011 comeback single “The Sound of Winter” from the band’s fifth studio album, The Sea Of Memories, Bush mixed old and new and kept the attention of the audience at a constant, all-time high throughout the entire set. Frontman, Rossdale, even took the opportunity to run through the field of fans and climb the bleachers during “Little Things” while the band kept the recognizable riffs in check before ending the set strong with fan favorites “Glycerine” and “Comedown”. Who says you can’t bring back a good thing? The band is embracing the sound that made them famous with a modern twist and for that reason Bush fans in Wisconsin are grateful.
